We are committed to world-class Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) performance, as demonstrated by our strong safety culture and long-standing commitment to Responsible Care®. We aim to eliminate injuries, prevent adverse environmental and health impacts, reduce waste and emissions, and promote resource conservation at every stage of the life cycle of our products.
We believe organizational culture and systemic employee engagement can help prevent accidents before they happen. One of the cornerstones of our safety culture is Prevent, Protect and Respond (PPR). This protocol builds on practices and expectations we have had for many years.
Our first line of defense is preventing unplanned events from happening. We use technology solutions to identify potential hazards putting workers in harm's way.
We identify possible hazards and take appropriate precautions—always using the correct personal protective equipment for the job at hand.
In the event of an unplanned incident, we respond rapidly to deescalate the situation as quickly and safely as possible. We then conduct thorough reviews with clear action plans to do everything we can to avoid a similar occurrence.
We encourage everyone on Team Dow to speak up if they see something with the potential to be unsafe—including a near miss. Significant near misses are investigated for corrective actions and learning opportunities.
Lifeguard Awards celebrate employees who intervene in a potentially risky situation and encourage future interventions.
We implemented a requirement in 2023 to emphasize the radius of danger of operational equipment. The implementation of this requirement improved performance substantially—culminating in zero recordable injuries from chemical exposures in the fourth quarter of 2023.
To complement behavioral actions, we are using technology to eliminate tasks where an employee could be in harm's way. One example is proximity protection technology, which alerts heavy equipment drivers when a person nearby is in a blind spot.
We are committed to following legal requirements, Dow standards and contractual agreements in every region where we operate. We also have a long-standing commitment to the Responsible Care® initiative, the voluntary initiative by the chemical industry to improve the health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) performance of its products, processes, and technologies.
