MIDLAND, Mich. – May 23, 2020 – Significant progress continues to be made on clean-up and recovery efforts at Dow Michigan Operations.
The ongoing efforts to reduce the water level in the brine pond have been successful, and flood waters are no longer co-mingling with the on-site brine pond.
There have been no reported product releases and no reported employee injuries.
Only essential staff remain on-site to monitor the situation and assess potential impact. The team continues to monitor the predicted rain in the forecast, and while they do not expect an impact, contingency plans are in place.
Friday, May 22, 5:30 p.m. Eastern
MIDLAND, Mich. – May 22, 2020 – As flood waters continue to recede, Dow (NYSE: DOW) is implementing a comprehensive clean-up and recovery plan.
Significant progress has been made to restore utilities, infrastructure, and logistics across the site to normal operations.
The brine pond is being pumped to the Michigan Operations Waste Water Treatment Plant to reduce water levels back to normal.
There have been no reported product releases and no reported employee injuries.
Only essential staff remain on-site to monitor the situation and assess potential impact. The team is monitoring the predicted rain in the forecast, and while they do not expect an impact, contingency plans are in place.

Thursday, May 21, 5:00p.m. Eastern
MIDLAND, Mich. – May 21, 2020 – With flood waters cresting yesterday evening, our focus is shifting into a clean-up and recovery mode. We have begun implementing site recovery plans and will continue to advance site assessments as the situation safely allows. This plan includes an inspection of all facilities and remediation assets along the Tittabawassee River as flood waters recede.
There has been no reported product releases and no reported employee injuries.
Yesterday, it was confirmed there were flood waters co-mingling with an on-site brine pond used for storm water and brine system / groundwater remediation. The material from the brine pond does not create any risk to residents or the environment.
We continue to engage with site tenants and Midland County officials to ensure the safety and security of our employees, community and the environment.
Only essential staff remain on-site to monitor the situation and assess potential impact. All other employees and supporting contractors will be contacted by their leaders for approval to return to the site over the next few days.
Dow Michigan Operations has Dow Performance Silicones production assets on site, as well as research and development and I-park infrastructure assets. The silicones assets are located in an area that has not been impacted by the flood waters. However, they do depend on infrastructure for operations provided by the Industrial Park. While we are in the early phases of recovery, we currently do not expect our Midland silicones assets to be offline for an extended period of time. Business continuity plans are in place to ensure customer needs are met.

All operating units on site have been safely shutdown, except for facilities needed for safely managing chemical containment, and all railcars are secured. At approximately 10:00 a.m. Eastern it was confirmed there were flood waters commingling with an on-site pond used for storm water and brine system/groundwater remediation. The material from the pond commingling with the flood waters does not create any threat to residents or environmental damage. There has been no reported product releases. Only essential staff are onsite to monitor and manage the situation with no reported employee injuries. Dow continues to engage with its site tenants and Midland County officials and take immediate action to ensure the safety and security of our employees, community and the environment.
