Landes assumes role of president of the Society of Plastics Engineers

(Business Wire) MIDLAND, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Brian Landes, technology leader for Dow, is assuming the role of president of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Executive Board. He was elected by SPE membership, a body of more than 22,000 members from 84 countries, to a three-year term in May 2018. He has since served as president-elect until March 16, 2019 when the passing of the gavel ceremony marks the beginning of his presidency, followed by a year of service as past-president.

We are tremendously proud of Brian, whose career is marked by his dedication and passion to the plastics engineering profession and our industry,” said A.N. Sreeram, senior vice president, Research and Development, and chief technology officer for Dow. “We know Brian will continue to lead this critical industry board with great insights and professionalism, and we are grateful for his leadership.”

Landes will lead the Executive Board as they work with SPE staff and membership to unite plastics professionals worldwide, helping them to succeed and strengthen their skills through networking, events, training, and knowledge sharing. Prior to being elected to his current role with the Society, Landes served on the Executive Board as vice president/Technology & Education. His membership in SPE has spanned his career, from graduate student through his nearly 35 years with Dow.

“I am grateful for Brian’s long-standing commitment to SPE as well as Dow’s generous corporate support of his active leadership in the Society’s activities,” said Pat Farrey, chief executive officer of SPE. “Serving as vice president of Technology and Education for three years, Brian led the development and implementation of new global initiatives that recognize and enrich SPE’s membership. His election by his peers as the Society’s president clearly demonstrates our membership’s recognition of his leadership, vision, significant contributions and service.”

Landes considers it an honor to serve as the next president of SPE, having also been named an SPE Fellow in 2013 and an Honored Service Member in 2015. “Throughout my career, I have benefited greatly from the training, mentoring, networking, and the diverse community that this organization offers, and I enjoy paying it forward. I especially enjoy mentoring students and young professionals as they launch their careers in our industry and become active in the Society and their local communities. In addition to the opportunity to attract future Dow talent, the global SPE network has enabled me, and many of my colleagues here at Dow, to accelerate innovation through access to expertise, capabilities, and technology that are not found together in any other forum.”

Landes has served in many leadership roles within SPE, including, international chair of SPE Divisions, and councilor. Landes also has been an invited speaker to represent industry before the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, The Department of Energy, The National Science Foundation, and several U.S. Secretaries of Energy, spanning the Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations.
