Dow recognized for STEM excellence and inclusion advancement with 2021 STAR Awards

MIDLAND, MI – October 11, 2021 – Dow (NYSE: Dow) recently received two awards from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) through their SHPE Technical Achievement and Recognition (STAR) award program.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers focuses on increasing representation of Hispanics in STEM. Every year they host the STAR Awards to honor outstanding professionals for their dedication, commitment, and selfless efforts to grow and advance Hispanics in STEM careers. They also recognize a company and government agency for demonstrating significant, measurable, and visible assistance to further SHPE’s programs.

Dr. Julibeth Martinez de la Hoz, research scientist, was selected as a recipient of the Young Investigator Award for her exemplary contributions to Dow’s Polyurethanes business. She led the scale up and implementation of a new-to-industry catalyst technology for commercial application. Her work will serve as the foundation for future processes that aim to reduce carbon footprint.

The Young Investigator Award recognizes young professionals for their contributions that help the progress of research in the fields of science and engineering.

The second recognition was given to Dow’s Hispanic & Latin Network (HLN), named the Hispanic Employee Resource Group of the Year.

The Hispanic Employee Resource Group (ERG) of the Year recognizes an organization’s outstanding Hispanic Employee Resource Group (ERG), specifically its effectiveness in the areas of culture, career, and community; as well as the ERG’s dedication to and success in attaining impactful results that foster a diverse and inclusive environment in their workplace.

For over 20 years, HLN’s mission has been to promote an inclusive culture and provide development, mentoring, networking, and community engagement opportunities for its members and allies. The ERG has a long-standing relationship with SHPE that includes active participation on their Industrial Partnership Council, collaboration and funding for student and professional development events, and recruitment of talent at their annual national convention.

“Dow takes pride in the strategic commitments we make towards advancing Inclusion and Diversity in STEM,” shared Mauro Gregorio, executive sponsor of Dow’s Hispanic and Latin Network employee resource group and business president of Performance Materials and Coatings. “It’s an honor to receive these two awards from an organization that is helping build the Hispanic talent pipeline of the future. I am incredibly proud of Julibeth for her outstanding accomplishments and of HLN for this special recognition. This milestone would not have been possible without the tireless efforts our members, sponsors, allies and ERG leadership team.”

Julibeth and select leaders representing HLN will be recognized during the SHPE National Convention, happening on November 10 – 14, 2021 in Orlando, Florida.
