Research & Development Internship – Cellulose ether for sustainable cements

We are looking for you, an ambitious bachelor´s student, to support our Dow Construction Chemicals business unit by conducting an internship project in Drymix Design for Sustainable Cements for our location in Bomlitz, Germany.

Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment.
The department that will welcome you is the global competence center at Dow Construction Chemicals for additives and binders used as performance ingredients in drymix mortars. The group develops new cellulose ethers, redispersible powders and latex binders for the construction industry. They also carry out practical application-oriented research projects involving Dow Construction Chemicals’ global customer base.

Project description

In their DCC project an intern runs design of experiment (DOE) on additives used in the drymix space and cement-based tile adhesives (CBTA) formulations which they will plan/design in close cooperation with their supervisor. Following a thorough training on CBTA application testing the intern performs wet mortar evaluation (setting time, quick open time, anti-slip properties) as well as normative tests (for instance adhesion bond strength). The intern will spend time working on predefined test formulations based on the DOE programming (“JMP” software used for design and evaluation) but also have ample opportunity to improve their working experience through planning own experiments based on initial outcomes of DOE lab experiments.

Within a four months’ timeframe the intern will conduct two sets of 28-day-normative test series and additionally less time-consuming wet mortar performance assessments. It is expected that during the internship two or three independently designed DOEs are going to be executed.

Qualifications

  • You are currently studying for a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or related Material Science subjects
  • You have a good working knowledge of English; German knowledge is a benefit
  • Laboratory skills are a must; ideally obtained from university as well as laboratory assignments in industry or institutional research organizations

You can start between March-May for a period of 4-6 months (exact timing to be discussed).

Dow’s internships offer you the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in laboratory safe work environment, planning and evaluation with respect to design of experiments, insights into cement chemistry, and the development and evaluation of performance additives in construction materials
  • Participate in and contribute to Dow Construction Chemicals Global R&D activities
  • Explore Career Opportunities - by working in the field you have selected; you will receive an inside look at your potential career path
  • Network - meet a variety of people in your chosen profession through your internship, allowing you to form relationships you can build on in the future
