Dow has an exciting opportunity for a Unit Leader/Production Coordinator position in Bristol, PA.
About you and this role
Works across all units to provide technical expertise to solve complex technical issues and institute systematic solutions. Works with the Business, Plant and Partners to determine long term production rates and the plant outages to meet demand. Provides coaching and training to plant personnel to increase expertise and enable long term success of the facility.
Responsibilities / Duties
- Provides advanced troubleshooting support for critical production and quality issues.
- Influences and coaches technical staff to increase expertise index and drive technical solutions, continuous improvement in management systems and operational excellence.
- Works with the Business Production Planning and Schedule Execution roles to optimize the long-term production schedule.
- Owns technical improvement initiatives aligned with the business strategy.
- Understands the Business needs relating to production and translates these Business production goals into plant production goals.
- Works with Integrated Supply Chain to ensure plant needs are met, i.e. production planning, product shipping, raw materials, etc.
- Determines shutdown timing with applicable roles from Supply Chain, Turnaround, Operations, Maintenance and other service providers.
- Assists in the development of the plant specific Business rules for “Produce to Plan / Record Production Data” and ensures plant procedures are developed and used to apply the defined Business rules.
- Works with Schedule Execution role to resolve exceptions to production schedules, which are not covered by Business rules; communicate with partners, facilitates the resolution, understands impact on customer and develops the plan of action.
- Ensures an MOC is initiated whenever a facility moves to an abnormal operating status. Idling, decommissioning, mothballing, etc.
- Ensures production metrics/measurements, required by the work processes, are collected to track work process performance as per Business rules.
- Ensures effective measurement tools are in place to track production yields, raw material conversion and asset utilization.
- Coaches plant personnel on measurement tools and daily updates of performance records and business measurements. (E.g. Producer. money meter, conversion costs, % prime, etc.)
- People leadership for Bristol Reactor Operator group
- Backs up production engineer and quality coordinator
Required qualifications
- A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or relevant military experience at or above a U.S. E6 ranking or Canadian Petty Officer 2nd Class or Sergeant.
- A minimum of 3 years of relevant chemical manufacturing experience
- Must be able to be on-call during non-working hours
- Work weekends as needed and the ability to work according to the necessary schedule to meet job requirements with or without reasonable accommodation is an essential function of this position
- A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Mechanical or Chemical Engineering degree
- Labor Relations experience and working with bargained for work force
- DeltaV Control System experience
- Root Cause Investigation/team leading experience
- Six Sigma/Green Belt Project Leader training
- Prior experience with production scheduling
Physical Demands:
Willing and able to meet physical demands of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations:
- Traverse indoor and outdoor production areas while wearing plant minimum PPE
- Wear and use respirators
- Perform infrequent bending, reaching, and lifting
- Work in tight or closed-in spaces
- Climb stairs/ladders and work high off the ground

- Infrequent lifting of material weighing approximately 55 lbs
- This role does involve elevated work greater than or equal to four feet above the ground. Must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE), including harnesses with a total weight capacity of 300lbs.

- Process Engineering: Process engineering is the understanding and application of the fundamental principles and laws of nature that allow us to transform raw material and energy into products that are useful to society, at an industrial level. By taking advantage of the driving forces of nature such as pressure, temperature and concentration gradients, as well as the law of conservation of mass, process engineers can develop methods to synthesize and purify large quantities of desired chemical products. Process engineering focuses on the design, operation, control, optimization and intensification of chemical, physical, and biological processes.
- Lean Manufacturing: Lean manufacturing is a production method. The term "Lean" is defined to consist of five key principles: 'Precisely specify value by specific product, identify the value stream for each product, make value flow without interruptions, let customer pull value from the producer, and pursue perfection.'
- Communication: Professional communication, encompasses written, oral, visual and digital communication within a workplace context.
- Environmental Health and Safety: Environment (E), health (H) and safety (S) (together EHS) is a discipline and specialty that studies and implements practical aspects of environmental protection and safety at work. In simple terms it is what organizations must do to make sure that their activities do not cause harm to anyone.
