As the Official Technical Partner of the USA Luge team, our own team of Dow scientists taps into world-class research, development and state-of-the-art technologies to develop new sled designs that are even faster, more tuned and more precise.
Luge is a true blend of athletic prowess and scientific excellence. The sport requires such precision that a fraction of a second – faster than the blink of an eye – can make or break a chance at standing on the podium. So when the team wanted to go faster ahead of the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018, we vowed to make it happen. Together, Dow and USA Luge scientists re-engineered the sleds based on coaching and technical feedback, computer simulation, field testing, and expertise in materials science and production. The results of this partnership are tangible.
Competing with an improved sled at the Olympic Winter Games Sochi 2014, Erin Hamlin made USA Luge history, bringing home the team’s first singles medal since the sport’s Olympic debut in 1964. Her bronze medal win also made the USA one of only five countries in the world to earn a medal in women’s singles luge. And at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, Chris Mazdzer also made USA Luge history by winning silver, marking the first men’s singles medal.
