Turning waste into energy

The high number of people that sporting events attract can naturally result in a lot of waste. Every year, Americans discard 29 million tons of plastic waste. To help combat food waste, Dow collaborates with municipal and industry partners to implement alternatives for plastic waste with EnergyBag™ programs, which turn non-recycled plastic like juice pouches, candy wrappers and plastic dinnerware, into energy resources. In 2017, the College Baseball World Series adopted the EnergyBag program at Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park, which hosts nearly 300,000 college baseball fans during the 11-day fest. Throughout the ballpark, fans deposited their non-recylable plastic into bright orange Hefty® EnergyBag bags made by Dow. Plastics put into the EnergyBags were converted into energy used to produce cement. The EnergyBag program represents a significant step toward creating alternative energy resources while sending less trash to landfills.
