Science of Speed Event Showcases Material Science behind AAA Texas 500 NASCAR Cup Race

Joint event with Richard Childress Racing unveils No. 3 Dow Winter in PyeongChang car decorated in Team USA colors, highlights 100-Day countdown to Olympic Winter Games

DENTON, Texas - November 03, 2017 - The worlds of NASCAR and Olympic Games came together this week to mark 100 days-to-go to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. On Nov. 1, ahead of the AAA Texas 500 NASCAR Cup race (Nov. 5), a panel of experts from science and sport convened at the University of North Texas to discuss the role of materials science and collaboration in driving greater speed in sports – specifically racing and luge.

The event was hosted by Texas Motor Speedway along with The Dow Chemical Company, a subsidiary of DowDuPont and a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games and of Team USA, as well as a sponsor of Richard Childress Racing (RCR). It featured two athletes who have benefited from the increased speed created by materials science: Austin Dillon, 2-time NASCAR champion, and Gordy Sheer, U.S. Olympic silver medalist, luge, and Director of Marketing and Sponsorship of USA Luge. The panel also featured Sam Crabtree, lead R&D manager with Dow’s Materials Engineering Center.

Dillon welcomed the crowd by highlighting how the paint scheme for his No. 3 Dow Winter in PyeongChang for the AAA Texas 500 race commemorates the countdown to The Winter Olympics.

In front of a captive audience of University of North Texas engineering students, the panel engaged in a lively discussion exploring the engineering similarities between the No. 3 Dow Chevrolet and USA Luge sleds, as well as the athletic training and performance needed to cross the finish line first.

Crabtree began the discussion by explaining the work Dow does to help both RCR and USA Luge athletes focus more on their speed and agility and less on correction during competition. “When you combine advanced materials, manufacturing and in-lab and on-track testing, you have the ability to develop ‘vehicles’ that are faster, more tuned, and precise, whether they have four wheels or no wheels,” Crabtree said.

“Dow scientists at the Materials Engineering Center work hand in hand with engineers from RCR and USA Luge on an ongoing basis to accomplish three very similar tasks: improve aerodynamics, identify the effects an extreme operating environment can have on material and component performance, as well as understand the race environment to develop the solutions that get athletes to the finish line quicker.”

Sheer offered the perspective of a luge athlete and explained why the development of the luge sled matters in the quest for gold. Sheer remarked, “Since our partnership with Dow began 10 years ago, they have contributed tremendously toward our success, by transforming our entire sled R&D, design and manufacturing process. We can’t wait to race in PyeongChang in less than 100 days with Dow behind us.”

Dillon explained how custom engineering works and the importance of his car being in top condition so he can put his focus on outperforming his fellow racers. Dillon said, “Dow and Richard Childress Racing work hand-in-hand on technology and innovation which helps keep my focus on performance. Currently, scientists and engineers from Dow and Richard Childress Racing are collaborating on projects focused on materials performance, with Dow-enabled technology in lubricants, foam insulators, oil additives, impact-reducing foam, sealants, and carbon fiber composites.”

Following the panel discussion and a short Q&A with the student attendees, Dillon, alongside Crabtree and Sheer, unveiled the No. 3 Dow Winter in PyeongChang Chevrolet paint scheme.
