Recyclable Barrier Film For Liquid Packaging

Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India - February 09, 2018 -

Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics (P&SP), a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company and value chain partner, Vishakha Polyfab, are taking the next step to increase the amount of plastic packaging being recycled in India today.

Recently, Dow announced the advancement of a partnership with local leading barrier film manufacturer, Vishakha Group, to develop a recyclable barrier film for liquid packaging at PlastIndia 2018.

Plastic packaging with barrier properties that extend a product's shelf life is a critical component in India's food industry, however recycling barrier films in the past have been problematic. This innovative material will enable previously non-recyclable packages to now be recycled in existing PE film recycle streams.

In 2016 Dow launched RecycleReady Technology in North America to help increase the amount of plastic waste being recycled. More recently this technology has been paired up with RETAIN™ Polymer Modifiers which enable packaging with the convenience and features of typical multi-material, multi-layered pouches and barrier film with the added benefit of recyclability.

Dow is now partnering with important members of the value chain to bring this technology to other parts of the world to help increase the recyclability of various types of packaging.

\"Dow's RecycleReady Technology combined with RETAIN™ provides brand owners with longer lasting products and gives consumers the ability to contribute to a more sustainable end-of-life option for everyday products,\" said Greg Bunker, global business director for Dow. \"With this technology, it is now equally important that we spend time educating the industry and consumers to increase positive consumer behavior when it comes to recycling these materials.\"

The initial agreement between Dow and Vishakha is for edible oil packaging with plans to expand to various other applications in the future.

\"We at Vishakha always strive to be in businesses which contribute to the sustainable growth of the country, such as enhancing agriculture, storage solutions and packaging material for a longer shelf life with renewable energy participation,\" said Jigish Doshi, CMD of Vishakha Polyfab Pvt Ltd.
