Greater Mount Zion Foundation Dream Camp Promotes STEM Education in Texas

- September 09, 2016 -

Twenty Dow employees volunteered recently at the GMZ Dream Camp in Brazoria, Texas. The camp is a one-week program held at Greater Mount Zion Church in Brazoria, Texas, and was recognized by the GMZ Foundation as the most successful camp in its six-year history.

Dow employees engaged with more than 200 students at this year's camp, where the students received instructional guidance on concepts from the Chemical Educational Foundation® You Be The Chemist Essential Elements℠ Program, which launched the first of its You Be The Chemist® (YBTC) programs in 2004.

The You Be The Chemist Essential Elements℠ Program is a professional development workshop designed to provide K–8 educators with “essential elements” in education, and methods for teaching chemistry concepts through hands-on learning and real-world connections. Dow sponsored the cost of the workshop materials and provided a Essential Elements Certified Instructor to deliver the training prior to the camp at our Dow Diamond Center facilities – to the Dream Camp teaching staff, most of whom are fulltime teachers within the neighboring school districts.

Dow employee volunteers, as Dow STEM Ambassadors, have played an integral part in the growth of programs launched by the Chemical Educational Foundation® since the partnership began in 2013, with Dow being recognized as a Diamond Sponsor since 2014. Through YBTC Challenges, activity guides and workshops, Dow has supported more than 58,000 students in 12 Dow communities nationwide this year.
