Elvaloy Ac Ethylene Acrylate Copolymer Versatility
DuPont’s EMA, EBA, and EEA copolymers, with acrylate levels up to 35% and upto 50 MI, cover a wide variety of uses including processing aid and properties enhancer in polyesters, ABS and polycarbonates.
As a toughener for PBT, Elvaloy® AC enables reduced extruder torque and energy use, or increased speed where extruder lines aretorque-limited. These resins are noncorrosive to equipment versus EVA.
Ethylene acrylate copolymer resins offer advantages in foam production, allowing softer foams to be made without loss of processability. These benefits also can be seen when Elvaloy® AC is used as a masterbatch carrier resin. Elvaloy® AC products (EBA and EMA) can improve the compounds’ melt flow versus using other traditional PBT modifiers.
As a processing aid for ABS, Elvaloy® AC not only improves toughness, but also reduces melt viscosity for faster molding and improved part appearance. Because of its good compatibility with ABS, Elvaloy® AC ethylene acrylate can be easily dispersed in the ABS matrix using a salt-and-pepper dry blend, eliminating a melt-blending step. All of these benefits can be seen when Elvaloy® AC is used as an ABS masterbatch carrier resin; it also works well in recycled ABS.
In polycarbonate (PC) and PC blends, using Elvaloy® AC with the combined modifier not only increases PC and PC/ABS impact strength, but also significantly reduces melt viscosity of the modified resin or alloy. In injection molding (such as helmets), a lower melt viscosity ensures good mold filling, smooth surface, shorter cycle time and higher yield.
Ethylene Acrylate Copolymer Thermal Stability
Dow™ Elvaloy® ethylene acrylate copolymer resins have a substantially higher heat resistance than EVAs and other polar copolymers. EVA, for example, starts to degrade around 220°C, whereas the EMAs remain stable up to 350°C in air, and EEAs are stable over 400°C in a nitrogen atmosphere.
Higher Melt Temperature
Dowethylene acrylate copolymer is manufactured using a tubular reactor instead of an autoclave. This results in a more heterogeneous molecular structure, and a higher crystalline melt temperature compared with conventional autoclave copolymers. For compounders, a higher melt temperature can reduce or eliminate problems of bridging and stickiness in the extruder feed zone.
Because they have a high polarity, Elvaloy® AC copolymers are compatible not only with polyolefins, but also a broad range of engineering plastics, including PA, PBT, PET, ABS, PC and LCPs. Ethylene acrylate resins are also excellent as compatibilizers for blends such as PC/PBT or PC/ABS.
Elvaloy® AC ethylene butyl-acrylate (EBA) copolymers add exceptional low-temperature toughness and impact resistance. EBAs are ideal for soft-touch and other high-value ergonomic and health-care applications.
