MIDLAND, Mich. – June 22, 2017 – Teresa Karjala, principal research scientist of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: Dow) for Packaging and Specialty Plastics, was elected a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE). Fellows are honored for their outstanding contributions in the field of plastics engineering, science or technology, or in the management of such activities.
Karjala was one of four Fellows named in May during the Society’s ANTEC 2017 conference in Anaheim, California. The conference is the plastics industry’s largest, most respected and well-known technical conference. Karjala was nominated by the Engineering Properties and Structure Division of SPE. She joins the ranks of only 318 other Fellows who have received the prestigious title since it was introduced in 1984.
“I can think of no one more deserving of this honor than Teresa,” said A.N. Sreeram, senior vice president, R&D, and chief technology officer. “In the more than two decades that she has been at our Company, she has been a prolific inventor and an inspiration to many of her colleagues. Her insight and creative imagining creates value time and time again.”
Karjala, who holds 60 U.S. patents and 30 European patents, has authored more than 70 research articles and presentations. She has more than 25 years of experience leading research and development in a variety of areas including materials science, product development, structure/property relationships, polymer rheology, and polymer processing of polyethylenes and their blends. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Michigan Technological University and a doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware.
