MIDLAND, Mich. – June 13, 2017 – Cory Valente, Ph.D., research and development and Strategic Recruiting and Research Assignments Program leader, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), was named the ACS Central Region’s 2017 recipient of the Stanley C. Israel Award for Advancing Diversity in the Chemical Sciences. The award was presented during the region’s meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Detroit, Mich. on June 8.
The award recognizes individuals who and/or institutions that have not only advanced diversity in the chemical sciences, but also significantly stimulated or fostered activities that promote inclusiveness within their region. In addition to Valente’s research and development role at Dow, he also serves as the global network leader for GLAD, Dow’s employee resource group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees and allies. In this role, he sets the network’s strategic priorities related to corporate reputation, equitable policies and practices, and culture change.
“Through his tireless passion and leadership, Cory has personally enabled a more open and inclusive culture at Dow, and elevated Dow’s advocacy efforts across both state and federal legislation for LGBT colleagues and citizens,” said Howard Ungerleider, vice chairman and chief financial officer for Dow and executive sponsor of GLAD. “He truly leads by example, setting the standard for others to emulate.”
In both 2015 and 2016, Valente was named to the OUTstanding LGBT Future Leaders list published by the Financial Times. He holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from York University in Toronto, and he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He has co-authored 25 peer-reviewed scientific publications, one book chapter and one U.S. patent application.
