Africa Growing Concentrated Solar Power Industry Heats Up
MADRID, SPAIN - February 04, 2016 - - The recent startup of Noor 1 and Bokpoort, Africa’s latest and most impressive thermosolar complexes, significantly advances the region’s growing renewable energy presence and further secures The Dow Chemical Company’s (NYSE: DOW) position as the world’s leading provider of heat transfer fluids for the Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) market.
The successful completion of Bokpoort in South Africa and Noor 1 in Morocco is a testament to the collaborative effort of companies known for their global CSP leadership. Dow announced in January 2014 that it would supply DOWTHERM™ A Heat Transfer Fluid to the ACWA Power-owned plants. A consortium composed of Spanish companies TSK, Acciona and SENER were awarded the Engineering Procurement and Construction contract. Crowie Projects was a fourth development partner in the Bokpoort project.
Dow completed fills for the Noor I plant in Morocco and the Bokpoort plant in South Africa this July, and both facilities completed construction within the past month.
\"We expect a high level of flexibility and customer orientation from our suppliers, and Dow is able to deliver that with their experience, quality and competitive pricing,\" said Ramon Vidal, Project Director for the Bokpoort EPC Consortium. \"Clear communication from Dow has enabled us to collaboratively overcome any minor obstacles and meet our project deadlines.\"
\"We value the efficiency and professionalism that Dow continues to bring as our trusted provider of heat transfer fluids for CSP facilities,\" said Carlos Ledesma, Project Director for the Noor 1 EPC Consortium. \"Their highly professional team demonstrated impressive flexibility in adapting to constantly changing parameters of the project and overcame complex supply obstacles in delivering to this remote location.\"
The 160 MW Noor 1 plant, part of a 500 MW multi-facility park that will form the world’s largest thermosolar complex, provides a premier example of the recent progress in renewable energy made in developing African nations. Noor 1 is the largest CSP project to date in Morocco and has more than 3 hours of energy storage.
The 50 MW Bokpoort plant has more than 9 hours of thermal energy storage, the longest amount in the world. It is part of the second round of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program. Dow also supplied the first CSP plant in South Africa with heat transfer fluids.
Globally, more than 40 CSP plants filled with DOWTHERM™ A provide enough electrical generation capacity to meet the needs of more than 1 million homes at a savings of more than 5 million metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.
