A Great Day to Recycle

MIDLAND, Mich. - December 12, 2016 -

The 2016 America Recycles Day had a big impact thanks to Dow Texas Operations. The Freeport site hosted its first recycling event on November 15, followed by a second event hosted at the Houston Dow Center on November 17. The events created a platform to discuss sustainable efforts within the communities and across Dow for a better environment. Reaching out to 150 employees, the America Recycles Day events highlighted the importance of recycling at home, taught employees how to properly recycle, and identified recycling centers within local communities.

Beyond the individual contributions toward a more sustainable environment, America Recycles Day highlighted initiatives led by Dow to improve recycle and sustainability programs. In 2016, Dow joined the Circular Economy 100, a global platform bringing together leading companies, emerging innovators, and regions to accelerate the transition to close the loop. The Recycle Ready Technology along with the Energy Bag Program in Omaha were also launched in 2016. Participants had the opportunity to understand the importance of packaging and how Dow is collaborating across the value chain to promote smarter and sustainable packaging. The Energy Bag Program sparked a lot of interest from participants as it helped identify other alternatives to landfill for plastic packaging.

This year, America Recycles Day successfully collected non-curb recycle items such as batteries, electronics, ink cartridges, electrical cords and reading glasses. Over 200 batteries, 10 cell phones, five large electronics, 16 ink cartridges and multiple electric cords were collected. These items were taken by our volunteers to recycling centers for proper disposal after each event. Reading glasses collected were donated to the Lions Club to help those in need.
