3d Overmolding Technology

Shanghai, China - April 11, 2018 -

The Dow Chemical Company’s Packaging and Specialty Plastics business (P&SP) showcases DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D overmolding technology and its wide innovative applications at LuxePack Shanghai 2018 from April 11 to 12 at Shanghai Exhibition Center (booth D6). Aimed at enabling perfume and cosmetics brand owners to further differentiate their luxury packaging, the DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D overmolding technology provides more design freedom, decoration possibilities and brand-new visual depth effect.

Inspired by the unlimited design variation possibilities of DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D overmolding technology, C.H. Plastic, a customer-oriented and creative fragrance and cosmetic packaging manufacturer, has launched a new technology on the overmolding of glass with DuPont™ Surlyn® resins. Containers with DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D overmolding, developed after three years of research, provide crystal transparency and increased safety and convenience for consumers with its light-weight, unbreakable and scratch-resistant features.

“In the world of luxury, a great product is synonymous with a great packaging design. For fragrances and cosmetics to be outstanding, the packaging needs to be creative and posh to generate the premium feel. DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D overmolding technology allows for greater design freedom which enables brand owners to create a strong identity using creative packaging to differentiate themselves,” said Takayuki Ohba, Group Marketing Director for Infrastructure, Consumer and Transportation, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, Asia Pacific. “Together with C.H. Plastic, we are proud to launch this new solution that fuses science with beauty for luxury packaging, raising the bar of the industry,” added Ohba.

The overmolded glass container harmonizes well with brand identity, and can be customized to reflect the latest trends providing more design freedom and unique possibilities.

Features of the glass container overmolded with DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D resin:

  • Thick-wall outer shell brings a pure sparkling crystal appearance, with no risk of breakage for greater consumer safety.
  • A transparent, smooth surface creates a magnifying effect on the colored/decorated glass insert beneath it.
  • The use of a glass insert helps retain the overall luxurious sense of weight as well as ensures high chemical compatibility with the content’s ingredient.

“DuPont™ Surlyn® 3D overmolding offers almost unlimited design variation possibilities, enabling cosmetics and perfumery professionals to respond to the growing demand from brands for clear differentiation and customization of packaging. By encasing a specifically developed glass bottle with DuPont™ Surlyn®, new possibilities in terms of shape and decoration can be created for traditional glass designs for cosmetic and fragrance packaging,” said Zhen Cheng Ou, general manager of C.H. Plastic, “Compared with other transparent resins, DuPont™ Surlyn® has significantly lower molding temperature and speed, well maintaining decoration details and avoiding breakage of glass containers.”
