More than just thrilling competition among the world’s top athletes, the Olympic Games Rio 2016 were a showcase for sustainability as Rio de Janeiro transformed to host the Games. The Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 worked to deliver Olympic Games with a low environmental footprint and a positive social legacy.
In support of that effort, Worldwide Olympic Partner Dow became the first partner of the “Abraça” (‘Embrace’) sustainability program and was selected as the Official Carbon Partner of Rio 2016. In this role, Dow implemented low-carbon technologies in key areas of the Brazilian economy to mitigate 500,000 tons of CO2 equivalents (CO2eq) from organizing and hosting the Games through 3rd party-verified emissions reductions. Dow was also the premier partner of Rio 2016’s education platform “Transforma,” serving as the STEM education partner and helping to expand the program to seven new cities in Brazil.
Additionally, Dow provided science-based technologies in multiple Olympic venues as well as enhancements to city infrastructure. These solutions and the implementation of the innovative carbon mitigation programs across the region enabled Rio to deliver a successful event and climate benefits well beyond the Olympic Games.
